SwingingOnTheSteel is a smart and likeable gelding in training with Rebecca Menzies, who showed a high level of ability in bumpers and remains a horse with significant upside as he transitions into handicaps.
He was purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock at the Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale, the same source as high-class performers such as Apple Away. Prior to that, he had already demonstrated promise in point-to-points, finishing second on debut at Larkhill before returning to the same venue to win in good style, travelling strongly and asserting with authority in the closing stages.
He quickly confirmed that promise under Rules. After finishing second on bumper debut at Sedgefield behind a well-regarded rival, he progressed rapidly to record back-to-back wins at Musselburgh and Sedgefield. On both occasions, he travelled powerfully through his races and won with something in hand, suggesting he was a horse operating well above average level in that sphere.
Watch his Musselburgh victory below:
While his early runs over hurdles have not yet reflected that ability, there have been clear reasons for that. His initial effort was later explained by a diagnosis of stomach ulcers, a common temporary, yet significant, issue which can markedly affect performance. Since then, a combination of unsuitable ground conditions and a loss of confidence have contributed to below-par runs.
"Sonny" has been given a nice break to freshen up and get him back enjoying life a lot more, and he seems much happier now. Importantly, he is now entering handicap hurdle company from an opening mark of 95, which looks very workable on the evidence of his bumper form.
SwingingOnTheSteel is by Linda’s Lad, a proven source of high-class National Hunt performers, and out of Patsola, who comes from a strong jumping family. He remains a horse with the physical scope and natural ability to progress.
With a clearer run of things, suitable ground, and a more patient ride to help him build confidence, there is reason to believe Rebecca Menzies can unlock that earlier promise. If he is able to translate his bumper ability into this sphere, he has the profile of a horse who could make his presence felt in handicaps and build momentum as he regains confidence.
Rebecca Menzies did not come from a racing background. Her journey began with a letter to her local stables. She was determined that racing was where she was headed and eventually got a job as a stable lass for Grade 1 and Cheltenham Festival winning trainer Ferdy Murphy. From here she progressed to racing secretary, travelling head lass and finally to Assistant Trainer. In 2013, she became Britain’s youngest trainer when starting out at 24 years old. It is through drive and determination that she has got to where she is today; Rebecca has now trained over 350 winners!
